The History of

Perigord Truffles of  Tasmania

 

Perigord Truffles of Tasmania was established to capitalise on the opportunity of producing and marketing the French Black Truffle in Tasmania and supplying the truffles fresh six months out of season to the Northern Hemisphere and developing a market in Australia for fresh French truffles.

A brief history of our company is as follows

1992 Co-Chairmen Duncan Garvey and Peter Cooper established Perigord Truffles of Tasmania
November, 1992 The Tasmanian Enterprise Workshop awarded PTT's business plan a prize for the product most likely to succeed.
October, 1993 Establishment of the Tasmania's first truffières.
1993 PTT was awarded a three-year research grant from the Rural Industries Research and Development Corporation (RIRDC) which has been recently been extended for an additional two years bringing the total research funding to $250,00
1994 Daryl Brown commences doctorate on the production of French Black Truffles in Tasmania
1996 Commenced supplying imported fresh French truffles to Australia's finest restaurants
18 June 1999 We harvest Australia's first French Black Truffle
2000 Three truffières produce truffles and PTT market the first home grown French Black Truffles in Claudes Restaurant, Sydney.
Nov 2000 PTT wins the RIRDC national business plan award.
April 2001 PTT is awarded a Jaguar/Gourmet Traveller award for excellence in primary production.
Winter 2001 Truffières established in the colder regions on NSW and Victoria. Truffles harvested on six sites within Tasmania.
Autumn 2002 Further expansion into Vic and NSW.
Winter 2002 Truffles harvested from 11 truffières in Tasmania.
Winter 2003 Production from twelve sites in Tasmania
Spring 2004 Further expansion into the colder areas of NSW and Victoria.
Winter 2005 New truffières producing in Tasmania. First truffle production in Yarra Valley, Victoria and Blayney district of NSW on 3-4 year old trees. PTT is awarded a 2005 Vogue Produce Award.
Winter 2006 During the 2006 season we harvested truffles from 9 of the 11 truffières  in Victoria and NSW. These truffières were less than 5 years old. First export of truffles to Japan and Europe .
Winter 2008 Truffles launched into Hong Kong and Macau restaurants.
