Site selection

The selection of the site to locate the trufferie is very important.

The critical factors are:

• The trufferie must be established in a climate where regular winter frosts occur.
• The winter chill factor is vitally important to produce fully mature French truffles.
• A northerly aspect is preferred but not essential.
• A soil with good structural characteristics for drainage and aeration is very important.

It is very important that the trufferie is established well away from other trees, which can host other ectomycorrhizal fungi.

The ectomycorrhizal fungi associates with many Australian trees such as eucalyptus, wattles, blackwoods etc and many introduced trees such as willows, pines can potentially contaminate the truffle trees. The result is the invading fungi will occupy root space on the inoculated truffle trees and replace the slow growing tuber melanosporum from the root system.
