Vermin proof fencing is absolutely essential around the trufferie to ensure the trees are not damaged by grazing or native animals. Our experience on one trufferie in Tasmania is that native animals very much enjoy eating French truffles.
The fencing will also reduce the risk of contamination from competing fungi introduced by native animals. The standard of fencing will largely be dependant on the expected level of pressure from native animals namely, wombats, possums, bandicoots kangaroos and rabbits.
