2010 Harvest
The 2010 was by far the most successful French truffle harvest to date.
Mid June saw the arrival of cold weather across South Eastern Australia and with it, the maturity of the early season truffles.
Truffle harvesting commenced in the Southern Tablelands of NSW and Northern Tasmania in mid June.
The 2010 harvest which commenced in early June was completed in mid September.
The quality of the truffles was exceptional which further vindicated PTT decision to concentrate on the cold soils of SE Australia.
The finest quality truffles were marketed to Australia’s leading restaurants and exported to Asia and Northern Europe.
The truffle harvest in Tasmania was successful with production increasing in a number of trufferies. This was in spite of a cold spring in Northern Tasmania which created far less than ideal growing conditions during the period of truffle initiation.
Following the success in 2005 of harvesting the first truffles near Blayney in NSW and in the Yarra Valley, Victoria, the number of young trufferies in Victoria and NSW producing truffles has increased significantly.
At the completion of the 2010 truffle harvest all 22 trufferies at 5 years established on the mainland (suggested year of first production) have produced.
With one exception they all produced at 4 years of age. Five plantings have produced at three years of age. The early production in NSW and Victoria is exceptional, and implies on the basis of my experience a significant expectation for future production.
